This addressed to all you fabulous wood sellers - I'm planning to build a one-of-a-kind instrument for my wife's 50th birthday. I haven't drawn it full size yet, but it's going to be a sort of cross between a mandola and a guitar, with a unique teardrop-shaped body. I'd like to buy a really extrordinary, jaw-dropping, eye-popping set of figured wood for the back, sides, and neck (all matching). I expect the body of the instrument to be about 12" wide by 16" (at the most) long, no more than 4" deep. With the teardrop shape, the sides shouldn't have to be more than about 24" long. I don't mind piecing together a neck, so I would just need 1" thick stock, about 3" wide by maybe 26" total length, to construct the neck out of. Or a one-piece chunk would be fine, too. Some possibilities I've thought of - claro walnut, koa, black acacia, myrtle... I haven't worked with all of these, and one criteria is that it isn't too much of a bear to bend. I'm open to suggestions... maybe something really out-of-the-ordinary...? I thought that some of you might have something outrageously gorgeous around that's not big enough to cut into regular guitar sets. If you think you might have something for me, please send me a private message. Thanks!!! |

Australian Tonewoods (on of the OLF sponsers) has australian blackwood (black acacia) neck stock with very nice figure. It would add alot of interest to the look of the neck. |

Hey Todd, What did you come up with? I put the same kind of request in with the Zoot man and he hooked me up with some nice Sapele. It matched real nice with some old mohogany I used for the neck. Wade |

I have all kinds of nicely figured wood that are too small for regular size guitars that I would sell at a very attractive price (compard to ths regular sets). I definately have some high figure koa, ceylon satinwood, coco, ziricote, etc. I also have snakewood. |
